Take a deep breath and press F1

Although irritating for a number of reasons the recent contacts "feature" (which came out in 8.0) can be disabled through your preferences. You can also remove particular entries from your personal addressbook, recent contacts view. I believe in 8.5 you can customize desktop policies to disable it.
